Burnout or just tired? How to tell the difference

Tiredness goes away after a holiday. Burnout comes back on the first day back at work, because it is not about the number of hours, but about meaning.

Burnout sau doar oboseală? Cum faci diferența

The simplest test: after two weeks of holiday, how do you feel on the first day back? If the answer is “as if I had never left”, it is not tiredness.

The three components

Burnout has a clear structure, described in the specialist literature. It is not just exhaustion.

1. Exhaustion

Not just physical. It is the feeling that your emotional resources have run out, that you have nothing left to give, no matter how much you sleep.

2. Cynical distancing

A detachment from work and from the people around it appears. Colleagues become obstacles, clients become cases, and you catch yourself talking about them with a harshness that is not like you.

3. A reduced sense of effectiveness

You start to believe you are not good at what you do, even though the results show otherwise. Every success looks like luck, every mistake looks like confirmation.

If only exhaustion is present, it is usually overload. When all three appear, it is burnout.

What actually causes it

Not the number of hours. People who work a lot but have control over their work and see its meaning rarely reach burnout. The factors that matter most:

  • Lack of control over the decisions that concern you
  • Insufficient reward, not just in salary but also in recognition
  • Rules applied unequally, where effort does not correlate with results
  • Conflict of values: what you are asked to do contradicts what you believe
  • An eroded community: cold or conflictual relationships at work

What does not fix burnout

  • A holiday. It helps temporarily, but the problem is in the structure of the work, not in the lack of a break.
  • Mindfulness apps. Useful as support, insufficient as a solution.
  • Working more efficiently. It adds one more task to an already impossible list.

What helps

In therapy we work in two directions at once: rebuilding resources (sleep, boundaries, activities unrelated to work) and changing something concrete in the work situation. The second part is the uncomfortable one, but without it the first does not hold.

Untreated burnout frequently develops into clinical depression. The earlier we intervene, the shorter the recovery.
